How is it difficult to put a HD touch screen in a car stereo....Apparently not hard or expensive at all. $60 on amazon. Its some kind of generic.

Finding a cheap one for my car should be easy, since I just have to go on Amazon and put in “under $10" to achieve the same material quality as my interior

I’m not crazy about chrome trim.
This is what I put in my Town Car. Thoughts? I personally hate it—not least because it’s so damn bright—but this this is becoming a thing, I figured I'd offer it up for comment.

Wouldn’t it be faster to type “GM OEM head unit 1998" rather than playing with filters?

There are some cool Android based stereos on eBay and Amazon. That may be an upgrade soon for my car. There are neat possibilities with scripting up custom functions and custom voice commands.

Chrome trim is okay when it’s a match to the original oldness of the car.
I have one of these for my Ranchero that I’m going to get and turn into a raspberry pi (repurpose the control knobs with an ADC shield), and hide a screen for somewhere - like in the ashtray slide.

Back when men were men, chrome was chrome, and radios only tuned to AM stations.
I love the idea of hiding the display in the ashtray.

The other option would be converting the lower block to a slide, but eh. Regardless, if I ever really needed an ashtray I could convert the door cards. That (and what I have) is the less-fancy version of the radio, which doesn’t have five preset buttons - and that version surprisingly seems to be less common than the deluxe one. Eh, looks better. Uncluttered.

And you can get $1400 head units with 800x480 resolution...

I mean with how cheap tablets are nowadays why just not use the screen of that and put it on a head unit.

I should clarify - I’ve gotten the radio, but the Pi and shields, not yet. It *will* all fit in the original case, though, because there’s a huge amount of space inside. The tuner is a variable coil which will take some programming trickery for the pi to use and “read”, but the other two functions are basic pots, so a lot easier to work with.

Be careful as I’m guessing most are running outdated versions of android or slow processors with low ram so be prepared for a lag fest. Otherwise just do a tablet conversion using an iPad or a Nexus tablet.

I put this in the Mercedes a few days ago, it’s pretty low key. It’s been in a box on my shelf for two years I think. So far I wish it had number buttons for my fav stations like my Honda, it’s what I use the most, 4 stations: NPR, classical music and two 80's music stations. It doesn’t look too out of place and the face comes off. It has a usb so I have to get a USB to AUX to plug into my old samsung phone I use as a MP3 player. Has tons of settings and I got it dialed in to sound pretty good.

Yeah most are too flashy, I have an old Mercedes so I put in the one I posted above. Mostly black but has modern features.

At the other end of the scale look at my review of the Eonon factory-fit android touchscreens.

Tablets lack the connections you’d want in a vehicle. I’ve seen the conversions but they’re a ton of work. I’m okay being a little out of date (it’s the kind of purchase that requires a lot of research).
